Constructed of native stone and wood of Oregon with a slate floor, the wide, tall door of the entrance invites special events like weddings and christenings to flow into a generous forecourt. The design of the interior "confined" space also extends outward into nature both visually and by way of operable awning type windows along the side. Surrounded by existing large trees the Capella is designed to link the gardens of Azalea Park. Simplicity and peace are keywords for Capella by the Sea.
The unique design has been a challenge to Paul Viale, the building contractor and to the stone masonry of Don Scoggins who have dealt daily with the architects' requirements. The majority of the actual building of the Capella is being done by "master carpenter," Rich Miller, and his associate Mike Owens. Small and intimate, the interior space of the Capella is 20 feet wide, 40 feet in length and 38 feet in height. The fixed pews can accomodate 40 people.
